Dr. Wayne Cody Scholarship in Medicinal Biological Chemistry

The Dr. Wayne Cody Scholarship Endowment in Medicinal Biological Chemistry Photo of Wayne Codywas made possible through generous gifts from Donna Cody, members of the Cody family, and friends of Wayne who made memorial contributions.

background

Dr. Wayne L. Cody, a charter member of the American Peptide Society, passed away in his sleep on Saturday, November 10, 2007. Wayne obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry in 1981 from Allegheny College. He then ventured to the Western United States and pursued his Ph.D. at the University of Arizona where he worked in the laboratory of Victor J. Hruby. Wayne was an exceptionally productive Ph.D. student with 18 publications in the primary literature, and made major contributions to the development of structure activity relationships (SAR) and conformation-activity relationships (CAR) of melanotropin peptides. These advances have been widely used by others since then to develop potent and selective ligands for four of the melanocortin receptors.

eligibility

  • Recipients may be male or female graduate students in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Arizona.
  • Recipients must be in the third or fourth year of graduate study.
  • Dr. Wayne Cody made important contributions in the area of medicinal chemistry and, in particular, in the design of endothelin receptor antagonists. Preference shall be given to students working on any chemical aspect of drug design and development (broadly defined) including synthetic, computational, biophysical and molecular biological aspects.
  • There may be multiple award winners in any one year as determined by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry scholarship selection committee.
  • Recipients of the scholarship may be eligible for a one-time competitive renewal with the final award decision made by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry scholarship selection committee.
  • Recipients already may have graduate or teaching assistantships, in which case, financial awards from the Dr. Wayne Cody Scholarship Endowment will always be in addition to any other graduate or teaching assistantship awards the recipient might be receiving.

Selection process

The Head(s) of the University of Arizona Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry will appoint a Scholarship Selection Committee.
